PROJECT PARTNERS
THE KAPUNI PROJECT IS A COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN HIRINGA ENERGY, BALLANCE AGRI-NUTRIENTS, TODD, PARININIHI KI WAITŌTARA AND THE MINISTRY OF BUSINESS, INNOVATION AND EMPLOYMENT, CREATING A NEW ENERGY FUTURE FOR THE TARANAKI REGION, AND NEW ZEALAND.
Hiringa Energy has been at the forefront of the energy transition since 2016, developing renewable energy and green hydrogen infrastructure to decarbonise industry, agriculture, and transport.
As the Project Developer and Operator in the Kapuni Project, Hiringa Energy brings deep expertise in large-scale energy and green hydrogen and renewables initiatives, supporting the transition to a low-emission economy.
With a proven track record - including New Zealand’s first Green Hydrogen Refuelling Network, which has already displaced over 265,000 kg of CO₂ - Hiringa Energy is committed to delivering projects that foster local employment, upskilling, and long-term sustainability. Founded and based in Taranaki,
Hiringa Energy continues to lead the way in renewable generation and green hydrogen development across New Zealand and Australia and is looking forward to bringing this project to life alongside our partners.
Ballance Agri-Nutrients is New Zealand’s largest farmer- and grower-owned co‑operative, delivering secure and affordable nutrients to address soil deficiencies nationwide. It operates the country’s only ammonia‑urea manufacturing plant in Taranaki and produces phosphate fertiliser in Southland. The Kapuni urea plant, in operation since 1982 and employing around 120 people, manufactures roughly one third of New Zealand’s urea supply around 260,000 tonnes annually primarily for use as nitrogen fertiliser.
The co‑operative is at the forefront of New Zealand’s move into green hydrogen. In partnership with Hiringa Energy, Todd, Parininihi ki Waitōtara (PKW), Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), Ballance is developing a renewable energy and green hydrogen hub in Taranaki to build a sustainable green hydrogen market. This partnership reflects their commitment to reducing environmental impacts across the business and supporting more sustainable farm inputs throughout Aotearoa. The project’s 24 MW of renewable energy will also contribute to the wider national electricity market.

Growth
Throughout its 150-year history, Todd has played a vital role in supporting New Zealand’s growth and prosperity. Today, the company’s primary focus is the New Zealand energy sector, where it manages and develops domestic energy assets to ensure the nation’s energy supply is secure, resilient, and sustainable. Todd collaborates across industries, with customers, and communities to develop energy solutions that deliver value, respect cultural values, and promote energy choice for New Zealanders.
The Kapuni Project complements Todd’s existing energy business and provides a platform for future opportunities in green energy. The company recognises wind and green hydrogen as important emerging opportunities for New Zealand’s energy future, with the potential to support decarbonisation across both transport and industry. Partnerships like the Kapuni Project represent what will be required in the future to deliver new technologies and business models that contribute to regional development and the energy transition, enabling a better future for New Zealand.
